Creative Studio Portraits in Lake Charles: Experimenting with Dramatic Lighting Techniques
When it comes to portrait photography, the possibilities are endless, especially when you're willing to step outside the box and experiment with creative lighting. Recently, I had the pleasure of working with Heidi in a unique portrait session right here in my Lake Charles office. Although it’s not a traditional studio, my office space has proven to be perfect for the kind of creative shoots that bring a fresh, dramatic flair to portrait photography.
The Goal: Experimentation and Creativity
The primary goal of this session was to explore the use of off-camera flashes and gels to create visually striking portraits. My aim was to move away from standard, predictable lighting setups and venture into something more artistic and bold. By experimenting with different lighting techniques, I could add layers of depth and emotion to the images, making them not only visually appealing but also intriguing and memorable.
The Lighting Setup: Godox Flashes with Gels
For this shoot, I relied on my trusted Godox lighting equipment. The main key light was a Godox AD300Pro, which provided a powerful yet controllable light source. To introduce color and mood into the shots, I used speedlights equipped with various gels. These gels allowed me to infuse the scenes with vibrant hues, creating a unique atmosphere and enhancing the overall aesthetic.
In some shots, I used red gels to create a warm, cinematic glow, which added a sense of intimacy and intensity. In other images, I combined red and blue gels to create a striking, dual-tone effect that added depth and drama. This blend of colors not only highlighted Heidi’s features but also gave each photo a distinct emotional tone.
Balancing Natural and Artificial Light
One of the main challenges during the session was managing the natural light coming through a window in my office. This unexpected light source introduced a variable that was difficult to control, making it challenging to achieve the precise lighting setup I had envisioned. However, instead of seeing this as a limitation, I embraced it as an opportunity to blend natural and artificial light creatively.
By adjusting my flash settings and repositioning the lights, I was able to balance the sunlight with the colored gels, which added a dynamic element to the portraits. This combination gave the images a unique look, with the natural light softening the edges and the colored gels providing striking visual contrast.
